ever changing floor patterns

Le Volcan (1982) is the cultural centre in Le Havre designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Its round forms differ strongly from the post war architecture and the orthogonal urban environment in which it lies.

It consists of a small and a large theatre in a sunken square. The square is shaped like a dove of peace. The theatres are accessible via ramps. The so-called big volcano is 22 metres high. At the base is a fountain, an enlarged copy of Oscar Niemeyer’s hand and with it the quote ‘ like this water, one day the earth, the beaches and the mountains will belong to everyone’.
